Careers at Riverside School
Preparing every learner for their future
At Riverside School, we believe that every young person has the right to a meaningful future. Our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme is designed to support students to develop the skills, confidence, and independence they need for life beyond school.
We follow the Gatsby Benchmarks and work closely with the Careers Hub to ensure our careers provision is structured, ambitious, and inclusive. Our programme is carefully adapted for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring that every student can access real and meaningful experiences of the world of work.
Our Vision
Our aim is to prepare students not only for employment, but for adulthood, independence, and active participation in their communities. We focus on:
- Developing independence and life skills
- Building confidence and communication skills
- Exploring real-world work experiences
- Supporting personalised pathways into education, training, or employment
- Encouraging ambition and aspiration for every learner
What We Offer
Work Experience & Employability Learning
Students take part in a wide range of internal and external work experience opportunities, including:
- School-based roles (Teaching Assistant, Gardening, Lunchtime Support, Enterprise activities)
- External placements in schools, charities, retail, catering, and community settings
- Supported experiences in real workplaces such as Forest School, theatres, rail services, and charity shops
- Employer-led workshops and visits that bring careers to life
- Careers-related experiences weaved through our PSHE and Preparation for Adulthood curriculum focused on exploration, and life skills, helping students build awareness of the world of work
These experiences help students develop practical skills, confidence, and an understanding of different career pathways.
Careers Learning in School
Careers education is embedded across the curriculum and includes:
- CV writing and interview preparation
- Understanding jobs and career pathways
- Developing employability and life skills
- Travel training and independence skills
- Goal setting and transition planning
- Regular careers guidance sessions tailored to individual needs
- Exploring the world of work through practical, real-life and sensory-based experiences, helping students develop awareness of different jobs, roles, and environments
- Developing key employability skills through structured lessons and activities, including communication, teamwork, independence, problem-solving, and turn-taking
Some students also complete accredited employability programmes such as ASDAN.
Employer Encounters & Experiences
We provide regular opportunities for students to meet employers and experience the world of work, including:
- Careers Fairs held at school
- National Careers Week activities
- Hands-on workshops with employers such as construction and trade companies
- Visits to workplaces including transport, retail, and creative industries
- Community and cultural organisation partnerships
These experiences help students understand the variety of opportunities available to them.
Supporting Every Pathway
We work closely with families, external agencies, and specialist providers to support smooth transitions for Post 16/19 into:
- Further education and College
- Pre-/Supported Internships and training programmes
- Pathways towards Employment
- Independent and Supported living pathways; Social Pathways
We are committed to ensuring that every student has a personalised pathway that reflects their strengths, interests, and aspirations.

- Local employers and Community organisations
- Colleges and post-16/19 providers
- SEND employment networks and forums
We continually develop these partnerships to strengthen opportunities for our learners.
