Creative Arts Week 2023
Have you ever been lucky enough to experience a sensory session? In April of 2023, Creative Arts Week at our school was a truly unique and unforgettable event. Produced by Owen Smith, the Exploratory Arts teacher, Anastasia Xirouchakis, the Art technician, Giles Leaman, the inventor, and Ruth Marshall, the music coordinator, the session was filled with wondrous ambient sounds, homemade musical instruments, multi-projected colours, and various sound artefacts.
Giles Leaman crafted the homemade musical instruments from both traditional and innovative materials, including modified cymbals and gongs, an oscillator machine, and a variety of multi-percussion and string sets, most of which were made from recycled materials. These instruments were visually stunning as well as aurally stimulating.
The students were encouraged to explore and discover new sounds and sensory stimulation. The sounds resonated throughout the room, combined with the projection of vibrant colours, creating a calming yet busy atmosphere – one that was both relaxing and invigorating.
This was a great opportunity for students to explore their creative sides and experiment with different colours, sounds, and instruments, while also learning how to explore sounds safely.
The session was an incredible journey...
